Aphthous ulcers, commonly known as canker sores, are painful sores or lesions that can develop on the mucous membranes inside the mouth. They typically appear as round or oval-shaped white or yellowish spots with a red border. These ulcers can occur on the inside of the lips, cheeks, tongue, and soft palate.

The cause of aphthous ulcers is such as stress, injury to the mouth tissues, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, and certain foods or medications may contribute to their development. Additionally, individuals with a family history of apthous ulcers may be more prone to experiencing them.

While apthous ulcers are not contagious and usually heal on their own within 1 to 2 weeks, they can cause discomfort and interfere with eating, speaking, and oral hygiene. Over-the-counter topical treatments such as mouthwashes, gels.

Maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding irritating foods or substances, managing stress levels, and getting adequate nutrition can also help reduce the frequency and severity of aphthous ulcers.
